Why we chose mission

We have each been involved in ministry with the Church of Toraja since the early 2000’s, and more recently as a married couple since 2015. Andrew has been teaching biblical studies to undergraduate students, as well as masters and doctoral students at IAKN Toraja, a government-run Christian tertiary institution with close ties to the Toraja church. Abi has a background in student ministry, with further studies in church management and education. She is currently focussed on children’s ministry in our local congregation.

Building God’s church in Toraja amidst modern challenges

God’s Spirit has been clearly at work in Toraja for over a hundred years through long-term preaching of the gospel, with early believers faithful even to the point of martyrdom. Modern life has brought relative prosperity to the region, and with it a complex interaction of traditional values and new aspirations. The church of Toraja continues to grow numerically, however is less successful in producing disciples who face such issues with integrity and wisdom.

Andrew ministers on campus to current and future ministers, and he writes a blog to help them dig deeper in their sermon preparation. The church needs people who can read the Bible well so that it may continue to be shaped and built up in maturity. Both of us are involved in our local church where we experience these challenges firsthand. Andrew helps with preaching, leads a Bible study with some keen elders, and attends the men’s ministry. Abi teaches in the Sunday School, runs an after-school primary-aged English class, and is active in women’s ministry.
