Growing up, neither of us knew God. Only in our years at university did we first meet Jesus and come to know God as our loving Father. It was there that we learnt about God’s mission to reconcile the nations to himself through Jesus. Over the years, as we prayed for CMS missionaries, we kept wondering – could we serve in this way? After many years of training, preparation, and prayer, we are now serving in Taiwan, where Shan-Shan was born!
Taiwan is a country full of contrasts. Folk religion and ancestor worship are huge parts of Taiwanese culture, and people regularly turn to the spirit world to seek blessing. Yet, young Taiwanese are also eagerly embracing Western culture and values. Christians in Taiwan often struggle to relate to their culture and communicate the gospel. As a result, the majority of Taiwanese with a folk religion background remain unreached, and many of the younger generations are leaving the church.
For most students in Taiwan, starting university means leaving home for the first time and travelling to another city, leaving behind family and friends. This means university is a unique opportunity for them to meet Christians and explore who Jesus is. For Christians, university is also their first time away from their family and church community.
Campus Evangelical Fellowship (CEF) seeks to be a faithful Christian presence and witness on campus for students. Through national camps they equip students to read the Bible for themselves, and they run student clubs on campus for fellowship and evangelism. We work together with the CEF team in our city, walking alongside students, opening God’s word with them, and sharing our lives. We long to see Taiwanese students leaving university confident that the risen Christ is Lord, convicted to serve him joyfully with their whole lives, and passionate to share him with others.
Students need your prayers as they face the challenges of life at university. We need your prayers for wisdom and boldness as we seek to learn and serve. Our whole family needs your encouragement, support and generous giving to live and serve here in Taiwan.
