We always had an eye to overseas mission and were initially hoping to head to Japan. In God’s sovereignty, we heard about the needs for theological education in Latin America. Since then, we’ve been focusing on teaching the Bible and preaching with various denominations and organisations around Peru. Growing in either of these areas is not quick! It takes patience and repeated visits. In God’s providence, after years of workshops, we’re starting to see leaders adopt the skills we’ve been teaching. We pray that we will see more of this over the years to come.
For the few Peruvian pastors who have an opportunity to study, teaching is focussed on doctrine and pastoral topics, without detailed study of whole books of the Bible. Yet God’s word is the fuel required to keep one’s eyes fixed on Jesus. We need whole books from beginning to end, not just passages used as springboards for moral themes and values, as in many churches.
We praise God that the Peruvian church is already active and vocal, but our hope is that through his self-revealing Word and by his Spirit, these people would have a deeper and richer understanding of God’s love for them in Jesus.
Preaching and teaching the Bible is a spiritual mission. In Peru, preaching or teaching differently to a pastor or ministry leader is effectively criticising them – as if to say, “you did it wrong”. Overcoming this only happens with a conviction of the importance and benefit of teaching whole books of the Bible. Such courage can only come through your prayerful partnership with our brothers and sisters in Peru.
Your financial support enables us to stay here long term, and your emails and videos encourage us to keep going. Ultimately it’s your partnership in prayer that makes the difference for our ministry to see a Peru that knows Jesus.
