Having grown up overseas, I’ve always found other countries interesting. Now, having been in South Asia for five years, I’m even more convinced of the privilege it is to work with different cultures. I’m working as a teacher, mainly with a multicultural homeschooling group. As well as supporting other expat families, I’m able to connect with locals through teaching English and art. It’s been challenging but rewarding to see the students develop friendships. As in any school, there are many small conflicts and stress filled moments, but I’m happy to be a part of teaching them active conflict resolution and coping skills. These kids are being prepared for our globalized world in unique and important ways.
In the afternoons, I’m able to meet with women and their kids. I love using creativity, such as doing painting and crochet together, to bring joy to their lives. As they feel safe and valued, we can share stories and pray. I’m part of a diverse community of Christ followers and it’s a joy to work together as we seek to introduce our friends to Jesus. I get to see people have tastes of the love of Jesus as they try to learn new skills without fear of failure. Our community finds all kinds of different ways for people to meet Jesus—through art, music, contemplative prayer, and of course lots of hospitality.
This work is a slow process, where relationships are key. People’s lives here are hard and there are often many obstacles of past hurts to overcome. I’m learning more of how Jesus is good news for everyone, and how simple acts of caring can be used powerfully for his kingdom. When people meet Jesus in the context of our diverse community, they meet a God who loves freely and fully, a God who is not waiting for them to fail. For people who have been performing for God through their whole lives, this meeting is profound. Would you partner with me in this work, through prayer and giving, to see a world that knows Jesus?
