Stepping into another culture has shown me the power of God’s loving presence. I have seen this in my own life as I adapt to new values and systems. I have seen it in the lives of new friends, as God draws many to depend upon him and the grace that he offers. While there are challenges in being a foreigner, there’s such joy in being part of communities in which people depend upon each other so deeply. It is in these relationships of mutual trust that the gospel can be thoughtfully shared, and the promise of Jesus depended upon as a firm foundation in the ups and downs of life.
In my location, conforming to social and familial expectations of success and wealth are highly valued, meaning that many young people feel pressure to excel. But as they become older and more aware of the realities of adult life, such as the complexities of politics or the highly competitive nature of the workforce, sometimes they are tempted to fall into despair. The gospel promise of genuine freedom in Christ really is like light in the darkness, offering a better hope and real peace. Where the surrounding environment would draw them away, role models who faithfully stand firm in their trust in Jesus can have a lasting impact.
Students are moving around the world more than ever, in search of new opportunities. I believe that partnership in the gospel across countries is an important and beautiful witness to the lordship of Jesus among university students, both locally and internationally.
Your prayer and support allow me to live freely and generously in a place where there is less visible Christian witness. But there are also ways that God uses our connection to inspire ministry and provide for the needs of students to seek him in whatever country their journey leads. We have an open invitation to work together with God – so how can we be gracious hosts and guests for the sake of Jesus?
