Why I chose mission

I have been working in Johannesburg, South Africa for seven years with CMS. I was able to see the opportunities and challenges of ministry in South Africa first-hand when I worked in Johannesburg over a decade ago. Johannesburg is a place of contrasts with some people enjoying extreme physical wealth and others facing significant levels of poverty. But Johannesburg is also a place of contrasts amongst the churches. There are numerous churches but unfortunately the gospel is not taught in many of them. This is why Johannesburg Bible College (JBC) is such a necessary ministry, as it helps to train men and women to correctly handle God’s word and teach the truth of Jesus.

Teaching God’s word in Johannesburg

In South Africa they estimate that there are 180,000 pastors who are running churches without training. Sadly, this can mean that some pastors do not have the gospel and might be sharing a different message with people within their churches.

JBC is an interdenominational college that seeks to reach these pastors who do not have access to training so that they can teach God’s word faithfully and get it across. The training is strategic because it is equipping and inspiring men and women for Bible teaching ministry both in Johannesburg and beyond. We have students from South Africa and multiple other African countries who come to study in person. They receive teaching in how to read the Bible, interpret and teach the Bible in an assessable and practical format. Students are equipped to put into practice the skills of preaching, running Bible-studies and counselling. The course seeks to make sure that their own faith and life matches what they are teaching so that they can be light to their churches and communities.

I specifically work with women, seeking to teach, equip and ready them for ministry. It is a wonderful joy working with students and seeing them holistically grow in all areas of their lives – spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I teach the Biblical Counselling Course which helps them to see areas of their life where healing and maturity is needed.
