An evangelistic tea ceremony

CMS missionary Elle Bryce serves in Japan. In this article, she reflects on a recent church event, which used a familiar Japanese tradition as an opportunity for evangelism.

Recently, my church hosted a tea ceremony to celebrate the new year and re-invite friends and neighbours to church.

I had the great pleasure of helping serve the tea and traditional sweets at this event, and was dressed in a traditional kimono—with elements of my outfit either borrowed or gifted by women from church or my local community.

I invited a young woman, S, who became Christian a bit over two years ago. S and I have been reading through 1 Corinthians together since last year. She has been thinking through questions of how her faith can relate to her culture, especially as the only Christian in her family.

 

Tea ceremonies and spirituality

In her last year at university, S joined a tea ceremony club. During this time, she did a lot of deep thinking on the early history of Christianity in Japan, and how it relates to traditions such as the tea ceremony.

I asked S whether the tea ceremony has a spiritual significance for the average Japanese person. She said that it is usually intertwined in people’s minds with the Buddhist concepts of ‘space’ and ‘zen’, which lend the ceremony a meditative quality.

As you can imagine, this is quite a complicated spiritual landscape to navigate as a Japanese Christian. It has been a privilege to walk alongside S as she thinks through these issues with the Bible open.

She was excited to discover that my church has been using the tradition of tea ceremonies evangelistically.

Showing a glimpse into our faith

Before the ceremony, my pastor shared a short Bible talk on John 1:1 and prayed over us all—which is such a rare and fantastic opportunity for someone who has never been in a church to get a taste of the gospel.

Through this tradition—which is familiar and accessible to the average Japanese person—we are able to show a glimpse into our faith, which they might never see otherwise.

After the ceremony, a lovely lady at church even gave S a cup with a cross design on it, to help her use the tradition of tea evangelistically as well.

Praise the Lord for the encouragement that this brought to S and for all the other friends and neighbours who attended.
