Watching courage grow

CMS missionaries Pedro and Joy Oliveira Woolmer serve in university student ministry in Montevideo, Uruguay. Here, Joy shares the story of Arianna, who is growing in her dependence on Christ, and her courage in sharing God’s Word.

Meet Arianna 

We first met Arianna almost five years ago. We had just arrived in Uruguay, and she was about to start university. She was (and still is) very quiet by nature, yet we have had the immense joy and privilege of getting to know and discipling Arianna over the last three years.  

She has been trained in preparing devotionals and writing a Bible study, has co-led training workshops with Pedro, and recently started her third MOCLAM subject. 

I have come to know Arianna well through our fortnightly catchups. We catch up, and then hand all our worries over to God in prayer, as we prepare to open his word. No matter what is happening in her life, Arianna has come to expect God’s Word to speak to her. She knows that Scripture will teach and remind her of what she needs to hear most, and give her the right perspective to persevere in Christ. 

 

God’s work in Arianna 

We recently finished reading 1 Peter together. For Arianna, Peter’s letter was a challenge to fear God, not man. This gave her the courage to face our fears in evangelism and open Christian living. It has been a great joy to see her grow in desire, competence and courage to live out her faith in a way that impacts others. She has taken on the challenge to endure unkind treatment for the sake of the gospel, and has shared openly about her faith and church discipleship group with her non-believing family. 

It has also been encouraging to witness Arianna’s love for her Christian brothers and sisters grow. Reading 1 Peter 4 together helped her to see that, even if we don’t feel gifted, we can still speak God’s Word to others and serve in his strength.  

At one point, she felt troubled that her Christian parents didn’t know how to live out their faith in day-to-day life. So we prayed that God would provide for them. A short time later, Arianna decided to chat with her pastor about starting a new discipleship group for older Christians like her parents. In God’s kindness, there are plans for this group to start soon!  

Arianna has had the opportunity to answer her mum’s questions about the Bible. Although it sometimes felt uncomfortable because their parent-daughter roles felt reversed, God has used these conversations to grow Arianna. 

We are so thankful for Arianna, and the joy it is to witness her grow in Christlikeness and courage in sharing God’s word. Please pray with us that many Christian students in Uruguay will be confident in Christ, and courageously share the gospel with others.
