Gripped by the gospel in my early 20s, I was convinced that my life is no longer my own but God’s. I knew I couldn’t just assume that God wanted me to continue living in Sydney, serving at my local church and working as an accountant. In 2008, on an overseas holiday in India, I was confronted by the reality that in other parts of the world the name of Jesus is not known. In God’s providence, I was reading Romans 10 and was challenged by the questions Paul poses about how people can believe in the one of whom they have never heard. He gives a clear answer “As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’ ” So since returning from that trip, I’ve been prayerfully asking God how He wants to use my life to bring glory to his name. Especially when I heard that even accounting skills can be a blessing to Christian businesses in God’s harvest field. I was, and continue to be, willing to go if God sees fit to send me where his name is not yet known.
My original ministry context involved using my professional skills to serve in a social business that provided dignified jobs for traumatised and marginalised women. Midway through, I swapped to become a full-time language and culture student, studying at a local university. My current ministry involves using my professional skills to serve at an International School that provides a Christ-centred education to children in South Asia. The children who attend this school come from a range of groups, including upper class South Asian families, expatriate families and gospel worker families.
In all these contexts, using my professional skills, I can be a blessing to Christian businesses and serve as a witness to how the gospel impacts both my personal and professional life. Serving at a Christian International School allows many gospel worker families to stay on location, knowing that their children are receiving high quality education in a Christian environment.
I can be a blessing to the local church in South Asia by discipling women and reading Scripture with them so they can be gripped by the gospel and grounded in the Word. It’s been a joy to co-lead a growth group of young South Asian women (in their 20s) with another mature believer. I can also model and foster generous hospitality within the church family. Many South Asians will show hospitality to people who are on the same level or at a higher level than them. It’s been encouraging to see this changing, and I continue to pray that God will deepen connections within this small family of Christ in South Asia.
In the Muslim majority country that I reside in, only 0.4% of the large population claim to know the Light, and many of these people’s hearts are not yet fully gripped by the gospel. South Asia is a place of gospel opportunity, both for reaching those walking in the darkness and for encouraging believers to deepen their love and knowledge of Jesus. Your partnership in the gospel through praying, caring and giving is vital in enabling me to stay long-term. Your prayers uphold me as I take on these gospel opportunities and live amongst South Asians. Your giving encourages me to be generous with all my life with many South Asians, and your care is a beautiful picture of how the gospel is at work in the believing community. So please continue praying, caring and giving for the work of the gospel in South Asia.
